# Fitly AI vs MyFitnessPal

*MyFitnessPal knows more foods than anyone. It still makes you do the typing.*

## What MyFitnessPal gets right

The database is a real moat: the largest in the category by a wide margin, built over a decade of users adding the specific yoghurt sold in their specific country. If you eat a lot of packaged food, especially outside the US, MyFitnessPal will have your item when nothing else does. No AI estimate beats a correct label. It is also the category default, which carries its own weight: your gym friends use it and every coach can read an export.

## The friction nobody talks about

The per-item loop is: open, tap the meal, search, scroll past near-matches, pick one, fix the serving unit, go back, repeat. Roughly forty seconds. Six items a day is four minutes; over a year that is about twenty-four hours spent on data entry. That is the actual reason most people quit tracking.

Fitly makes the unit of work the meal instead of the ingredient: describe the plate, photograph it, or scan the label. The second difference is scope, since MyFitnessPal treats exercise as a calorie offset rather than writing you a training program.

## Side by side

| Feature | MyFitnessPal | Fitly AI |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Food database | Largest in the category by a wide margin, crowd-sourced, quality varies | USDA-backed plus AI estimation |
| Logging a meal | Search and correct, per item | Describe, say, or photograph the whole plate |
| Barcode scanning | Listed under the paid Premium and Premium+ plans on their own comparison table | Barcodes and labels included on the AI tier |
| Workouts | Calorie offsets, not real programming | Full programs, adapted |
| Coaching | Articles and content | Conversational, reads your actual logs |
| Integrations | Dozens of direct app and device partners, plus Apple Health | Apple Health only, which is where most devices already land on iOS |
| Price | Genuine free tier plus paid Premium and Premium+ plans; rates differ by country and currency | $9.99/mo without AI, $24.99/mo with; no free tier |

MyFitnessPal feature comparison reflects the app as of August 2026.

## On accuracy, honestly

A scanned barcode is more accurate than an AI estimate. Fitly scans barcodes and labels too, so the gap on packaged food is smaller than it sounds, but for a rare regional product MyFitnessPal wins. The counter-argument is that a slightly fuzzy estimate you actually record beats a precise number you never enter because you quit in March.

## When you should stay with MyFitnessPal

- **You want the cheapest option.** MyFitnessPal has a genuine free tier and Fitly does not.
- **You eat mostly packaged food with barcodes.** The database advantage is real and the AI logging advantage is small.
- **Your coach or community lives there.** Being in the app they know beats any feature list.
